A new collaborative show by three MFA graduates -

+44 141 Gallery is pleased to present ‘The Beast That Shouted Love At
The Heart Of The World’, showcasing the result of a collaboration
between Glasgow-based artists Mark Briggs, Jim Colquhoun and Conor
Kelly.

Drawing from deviant histories within Ovidean mythology, 19th Century
Romanticism, and slapstick, the exhibition will act as an invitation
to worry the inherited tropes that grope towards the notion of a
contemporary sublime. The collaboration will play with states of
chaos, terror and deviant behaviour, neo-paganism, and arcane
revivalism through suppressed and unconscious histories.

Proposal for a Warehouse or Towards a Museum of Reorganisation is a project by James Hutchinson (MFA graduate 2011) that addresses the transformation of objects as they move through spaces, carried by the forces of capitalist flow, and considers how the spaces they move through are themselves transformed to accommodate this flow. As a part of How to Turn the World by Hand? via Beijing, Edinburgh, İstanbul - a year long, international research project in collaboration with Arrow Factory / Beijing, Collective / Edinburgh and PiST/// Istanbul, Hutchinson will be based at PiST/// to develop his project which feeds into a dialogue around trade and global movements. During his stay Hutchinson will be making new work as part of his ongoing project which involves the production of art shipping crates in locations that have been subject to massive reorganisation due to an imposed economic imperative and this context will also focus on the rapid gentrification in areas of Istanbul.

Usually, artwork is exhibited, documentation is published and, if on a digital platform, the Internet becomes the means of its dissemination. It’s Our Playground investigates the cohabitation of the virtual and the real, by setting up a physical exhibition and an online one. The project will look at artworks existing in different mediums (e.g., sculpture and JPEG, installation and GIF).

There will be original artworks in both exhibition spaces from the same artists. Artists include: Aaron Angell, Anthony Antonellis, Alistair Frost, Tom Godfrey, Rachel de Joode, Aurélien Mole, Mathew Parkin, Ciara Phillips, Owen Piper and Travess Smalley.... Here comes DOVBLE TROVBLE!

An exhibition of new work by Laurence Figgis, Brin Frost and current MFA student Zoe Williams. The artists have in-common an interest in the creation of internalised worlds, drawing on aspects of the surreal, the uncanny, the precious and the abject, and mobilising a diverse range of mediums to explore these themes including ornamental sculpture, collage and film. The objects and two-dimensional works on show in this exhibition appear on first glance to be drawn from a rich concoction of soap-opera, luxury commodity and primal myth. However on closer inspection, these isolated signifiers, divorced from their original context, often reveal darker, more disturbing undertones.

TURNER PRIZE 2011

The Turner Prize exhibition is now open at BALTIC, and features two MFA graduates, Karla Black and Martin Boyce. In 2007 the Prize was staged at Tate Liverpool as a curtain-raiser to Liverpool being European Capital of Culture in 2008. Following its success there, it has been decided that the Prize will be presented at Tate Britain and at a gallery outside London in alternate years. The first non-Tate venue outside the capital will be BALTIC in Gateshead.

Each year the Prize is judged by an independent jury. Chaired by Penelope Curtis, Director Tate Britain, the jury for The Turner Prize 2011 comprises: Katrina Brown, Director, The Common Guild, Glasgow; Vasif Kortun, Platform Garanti, Istanbul; Nadia Schneider, Freelance Curator; and Godfrey Worsdale, Director, BALTIC. The four shortlisted artists will be announced in May 2011.

The Turner Prize is awarded each year to a British artist under the age of fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding. The Prize fund of £40,000 is divided between the shortlisted artists with £25,000 going to the winner and £5,000 to each of the other three artists. Previous winners include Tomma Abts, Gilbert & George, Douglas Gordon, Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Steve McQueen, Gillian Wearing, Rachel Whiteread and Richard Wright.

Glasgow Sculpture Studios would like to invite you to join us for the preview of P is for Protagonist the solo exhibition of newly commissioned work by Sarah Forrest, The Gordon Foundation MFA Graduate Fellow 2010-11.

For P is for Protagonist, Forrest draws upon certain sensibilities found within gothic literature, paying particular attention to what is not seen. Forrest places her protagonists at the edge of visibility, presenting them in the text as a subject who comes in and out of focus or as a spectral presence within the video work.

The work presents two concurrent narratives that unfold and overlap, putting into play as they do so, her ongoing exploration of the interrelationships between maker, work and viewer.

Forrest will also launch her first publication alongside this exhibition on Saturday 10 December 2011 at GSS. The publication is designed in collaboration with Glasgow-based graphic designer, Zeynep Arman.

Born in Dundee UK 1981, Forrest received her MFA at The Glasgow School of Art in 2010. Recent exhibitions include DAYSTransmission Gallery Glasgow, The Spectator Intermedia Gallery, Centre for Contemporary Arts Glasgow,Hands Across the Fire(GANGHUT) DCA Dundee, L.P. Students of The Glasgow School of Art MFA programme are delighted to announce that this year’s auction will include works by Turner Prize nominees and winners such as Fiona Banner and Jim Lambie in addition to many other internationally renowned artists including Elizabeth Peyton Jonathan Monk and Ryan Gander.

This year the auction will be held at The Briggait, 141 Bridgegate. Glasgow G1 5HZ.

The annual MFA auction is produced by second year Master’s students to raise funds for the MFA international exhibition. The auction remains an essential date in the diary of both established and developing art collectors, offering the opportunity to purchase work by internationally recognised contemporary artists and invest in works by artists who will become the stars of the future. With reserves on the works in the Silent Auction at £25, there is something for all budgets and tastes.

Staged in the stunning Briggait space, the evening consists of two parts: a Silent Auction and a Live Auction. The Silent Auction allows bidders to view an exhibition of over fifty works in a variety of media produced by MFA students and other emerging artists. Bids may be placed on these works during a two-hour period.

Saving the best for last, the Live Auction is the main event of the evening. From 8:30pm onwards, Campbell Armour, Director of Edinburgh auction house Lyon and Turnbull hosts a traditional auction. Here you can bid on works by some of the best established and emerging contemporary artists Scotland has produced, including Claire Barclay, Alan Michael, Craig Mulholland, Nicolas Party, Toby Paterson, Corin Sworn, Alex Pollard, Michael Wilkinson. Alongside these will be artists from further afield including Chris Evans, Grier Edmundson, Phoebe Unwin, Brian Griffiths and more.

Through out the three weeks the viewer will observe the transformation of materials in to artworks and artworks into an exhibition.

The Québec Triennial 2011. The Work Ahead of Us⎯one of the most important and highly anticipated art events of the season⎯will be presented at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal from October 7, 2011 to January 3, 2012. For this second edition of the Triennial, the museum has put together a show on an unprecedented scale that will fill all eight of its exhibition galleries and spill over into its indoor public spaces, as well as Place des Festivals in the Quartier des Spectacles and the Espace culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme at Place des Arts. The exhibition will feature works by more than fifty artists and collectives, a majority of them young, who are contributing to a renewed Québec art. Current MFA student Rachal Bradley has contributed to LABOUR, an independent publication edited by Melissa Gordon and Marina Vishmidt. This is the first project resulting from an ongoing series of discussions among female artists in New York, Amsterdam and Berlin and London that took place in 2010-2011.

The publication launch for LABOUR will take place onWednesday, September 28^th, 2011, 6-7:30pm at the Elizabeth Dee Gallery, New York in conjunction with Meredyth Sparks' current exhibition, Striped Bare, Even and Again, September 15- October 29, 2011.

Though the subject, format, contributors and editorial team will change with each subsequent issue, LABOUR attempts to address the many facets of (feminized) artistic producer. Contributions to this issue include Nina Power on Women’s Work, Avigail Moss on What We Talk About When We Talk About Painting, Marina Vishmidt on Working Artists in the Greater Economy, Lisette Smits in conversation with Meredyth Sparks on The Female Dandy and Kaisa Lassinaro interviews director Lizzie Borden about Born in Flames. Also included in this issue are artist projects by Henry VIII’s Wives, Emma Hedditch and Rachal Bradley with Jessica Wiesner.

Recent work by graduates of the MFA programme, Glasgow School of Art

The Master of Fine Art programme at Glasgow School of Art is happy to extend
its relationship with the city of Berlin. For the fifth year running
graduates of the MFA will exhibit their work in Berlin, marking an important
stage in their development as independent artists. One of a small number of
two-year postgraduate fine art programmes in the UK, the MFA has helped to
establish Glasgow as a dynamic and international centre for contemporary
art. The multidisciplinary nature of the programme ensures a wide range of
work, in terms of both medium and subject matter, and an overall vibrancy.
The MFA international exhibition programme has previously included shows in
New York, Mexico City, Beijing, Budapest, Rotterdam and Copenhagen, helping
to establish important links across the world. These international ambitions
are also reflected in the range of nationalities of the artists represented
here, the 24 exhibitors coming from 11 different countries.

Previous graduates from the MFA include Simon Starling (Turner Prize winner,
2005), Karla Black (Scottish Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2011), Rosalind
Nashashibi (Beck's Futures prize winner, 2003), Martin Boyce (Scottish
Pavilion, Venice Biennale, 2009), Richard Wright (MOMA, New York; Turner
Prize 2009), Michael Fullerton (British Art Show, 2011), and Claire Barclay

An Exhibition to celebrate the closure of The Vic Café Bar

Sunday 19^th June 2011 7pm - 1am

'The End' is upon us, in a matter of weeks work will begin as the The Vic is completely refurbished and partly demolished. This will radically alter the character of the place that has fostered creativity in a multitude of forms in Glasgow over the last 80 years and become a significant social reference point for generations of students, artists and musicians.

The interior will be emptied, stripped and opened up to create temporary exhibition and event spaces before works start later this month. This will be a unique opportunity for anyone who has an attachment to this influential venue to experience it like never before.

We are delighted to announce that this year’s Gordon Foundation MFA Graduate Fellowship has been awarded to Alex Impey.

The announcement was made public on Wednesday, 08 June 2011 at The Glasgow School of Art’s Master of Fine Art (MFA) Degree Show preview by the Head of the Programme, John Calcutt.

Impey's work spans across drawing, sculpture, sound and writing. He'll begin his fellowship in November 2011and we look forward to working with him over the coming year.

'A tick can stay dormant for eighteen years when isolated from the conditions that trigger its behaviour. My work attempts to appropriate something of this inscrutable poise, in a set of figurations as pauses in habits around the use of languages and objects, which simultaneously seek to refer to their own consumption.' Some further MFA graduate successes to report.......the list of artists who will be taking part in this years New Work Scotland Programme has just been announced and Oliver Braid, Amelia Bywater, Christian Newby and Joey Villemont are amongst those to be slected. Congratulations to them.

2011 saw the introduction of a theme, Mining the Horizon, and more critical discourse. All selected practitioners will now take part in a weekend retreat together with Collective, the selectors and invited guests, at Hospitalfield House. Participants will also undertake a residency at Studio Voltaire, London or MAP, Glasgow.

NWSP is a Collective initiative recognised as giving Scottish based graduates their first significant visual art project or commission. Through an annual open application NWSP identifies and supports some of the most promising new practitioners working in the visual arts in Scotland - providing them with the opportunity to make new work and bring it to the attention of a wider public.

MFA Graduates nominated for Turner Prize 2011

Two Glasgow School of Art MFA graduates, Karla Black and Martin Boyce, have been shortlisted for the Turner Prize 2011.

Karla has been shortlisted for work shown at Berlin's Galerie Capitain Petzel, while Martin has been singled out for his solo exhibition at the Garleie Eva Presenhuber in Zurich.

The other two artists nominated this year are George Shaw and Hilary Lloyd. Works by each artist will be exhibited in Gateshead from October, with the winner to be announced on 5 December at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

The Gordon Foundation Graduate Fellow 2010-11

Sarah Forrest was selected as the Gordon Foundation Graduate Fellow in June 2010. This is an annual award for graduating MFA students that is offered by the Glasgow Sculpture Studios. Since last November, Sarah has been based at GSS, working alongside professional artists researching and developing new work for exhibitions that has included Days a group exhibition at Transmission Gallery Glasgow in November 2010.

Six months into her Fellowship and Sarah has her first solo show in Glasgow at Intermedia Gallery, Centre for Contemporary Art. For this exhibition she will be presenting The Spectator, an installation that combines new video, sculpture and spoken word narration. Sarah’s new work draws upon the image of the UFO, taking this recognizable object as her point of departure for her first solo exhibition.

Previous winners of this award have included Risa Tsunegi and Carla Scott Fullerton.

Anna Tanner’s recent work has found focus in the conflation of the image of mythological wild men (Sasquatch, The Yeti, Nookta) and their modern equivalents (vigilantes, explorers) with settings and objects taken from mundane, contemporary, urban, domestic and cultivated environments. Working with small, panoramic dioramas and painting, Tanner conjures mutations in space, time and scale which investigate the ways in which man can prove and exhibit bravery in a world in which so little of the natural landscape is left undiscovered, cultivated or urbanised.
Anna Tanner (b. Arkansas, 1979) lives and works in Glasgow. She completed her MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 2008. Her recent exhibitions include: New Work Scotland, Collective Gallery, Edinburgh; Zoo Art Fair, London; Set It Up And Go, APS Artnews Projects, Berlin; and Last Tango In Partick, Lowsalt/Now Museum, Glasgow. Tanner recently completed a residency project in France titled Walden Revisited.

Recent MFA graduate Corin Sworn has a solo exhibition at Tramway, Glasgow. For her project at Tramway, she will present a new film commission shot in the vast main theatre of Tramway. Utilizing the theatrical spot lights to create a pattern of seen and not seen, a single narrator will weave together a series of narratives, each one connected to the last through association. One might begin with the description of a deteriorating museum of fossils and skeletons, paint peeling from the walls and the enormous antlers of a Stone Age deer described as thick with collected dust, this narrative becomes the story of a Chris Marker film that was once set here. Later we hear of the author Raymond Roussel who commissioned an illustrator to produce drawings for one of his books as much to mislead the reader as to situate them. This structure, of stories that unfold one from another, stems from the process by which the scripts are written. They are partially made from appropriated texts put in conversation with each other. Thereby creating a script that is a sort of museum itself.

MAstars is an annual online selection of the most promising artists from the UK's leading MA courses. Each year a team of curators, academics and arts professionals choose different MA degree shows across the UK to visit and from these select artists to be featured on the MAstars website. One of the artists is then chosen to receive a 12 month residency at the Florence Trust, London (beginning in August 2011).

Visual artists Sybren Renema and Timmy van Zoelen will establish the The New Frisian Museum in SYB during the summer weeks: a mark of honour to the solitary individual in the cultural inheritance. According to the artists, collections in small regional museums, such as the Ruurd Wiersma Hûs and the catacombs in Wieuwerd, often appeal more to one’s imagination than the standard collections in a national museum. Moreover, it seems as if there is no hierarchy between objects in these kind of collections. In the same way, in Ald Slot in Warga, part of the collection of treacle waffle tin boxes is equated with the rest of the collection.

The New Frisian Museum will be working on an archive, a publication and an exhibition of improbable facts from the Frisian cultural inheritance. This will be the ‘B-side of Frisian history’ in which there is room for detection of extraterrestrials / aliens in Gorredijk and for speculations about the love affair between Indiana Jones and Mata Hari.

This kind of information is perhaps based on fiction too much, according to the artists, which means that it traditionally does not fit in the museum. At the same time, the most traditional collection is a collection of stories. Renema and Van Zoelen provoke the Frisian canon with their project. Their project can diverge from loan of and conversations with the owners of small museums to doing research to the sword of Grutte Pier, which is owned by the Frisian Museum, but is known to be fake.

Sybren Renema (Dordrecht, 1988) graduated at the KABK in The Hague last year and now follows an MFA at the Glasgow School of Art. With his work he used to provoke local social appointments: for instance in the Landesmuseum in Muenster in 2007, when he dared the management to take part in a ‘keelzang’ sing-along. Or when he wrote “I AM AFRAID” with fresh grass in an old grass cover. At this moment, his work can be seen at the Shanghai Biënnale and on BBC Big Screens, in all British cities at the sea.

Timmy van Zoelen (IJsselstein, 1982) also graduated in 2009 at the KABK in The Hague and now studies at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. His work could be seen earlier during State-X: New Forms in Paard van Troje, in Blaak 10, Rotterdam and in 1646 in The Hague.

Don't Be Too Serious

The prize winners for the BP Portrait Award 2010 were announced at the Awards Ceremony on the 22 June 2010. The BP Young Artist Award 2010 was awarded to current MFA student Elizabeth McDonald for Don't Be Too Serious.

Elizabeth McDonald painted her portrait of her friend and fellow artist, Camillo Paravicini, in his studio in her home city of Glasgow. While they worked in the same building, in neighbouring studios, the two artists hardly knew each other. She says while the clothing Camillo wears in the portrait - a black jacket and tie and black rimmed glasses - is similar to that which he would normally wear, his posture was staged to accentuate the tension between youth and maturity. ‘Through the sittings, and getting to know Camillo,' she says, ‘I not only found myself examining his personal style but looking closer at other aspects of his personality. Perhaps most intriguingly, I began to see simultaneously the boy in the young man and the older professional gentleman the young man could become.'

Glasgow Sculpture Studios Graduate Fellowship

Last Thursday evening, at The Glasgow School of Art’s City Night event, Sarah Forrest was awarded this year’s Glasgow Sculpture Studios Graduate Fellowship.

Sarah will begin her Fellowship in November 2010. As part of her MFA at the Glasgow School of Art Sarah spent one term at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam. Recent exhibitions include Hands Across the Fire (GANGHUT) DCA Dundee, L.P. Hendriks Rotterdam, The Space We Made La Vitrine Quebec, Don’t Cry It’s Only a Rhythm, Generator Projects Dundee.

Since June 2005, selection panels made up of a diverse range of arts professionals have selected one graduate from MFA to be awarded the Glasgow Sculpture Studios Graduate Fellowship.

This year’s selection panel included Becky Anson, Co-director, Lowsalt Gallery, Jenny Crowe, Public Art Commissioner, Crowe Commissions, Charles Engebretsen, GSS CPF Co-ordinator, Benjamin Fallon, Curator & Director of Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh, Andrew Miller, Artist & GSS Studio Holder and David Watt, GSS Director.

Each year GSS offers the recipient annual Artist Membership, private studio accommodation, access to professional opportunities and specialist communal production facilities, training and curatorial, technical and administrative support. In addition to the above, funding is secured towards realising a solo project, as part of the GSS Public programme.

Past recipients have included Laura Aldridge, Risa Tsunegi, Carla Scott Fullerton and Jonathan Scott.

The British Art Show is widely recognised as one of the most ambitious and influential exhibition of contemporary British art. Organised by Hayward Touring, it takes place every five years and tours to four different cities across the UK. Now in its seventh incarnation the British Art Show opens in Nottingham, and tours for the first time in 20 years to the Hayward Gallery, followed by venues in Glasgow and Plymouth. It is curated by Lisa Le Feuvre and Tom Morton.

What a mess.

One of the things often forgotten when artists rescue former industrial spaces to use as galleries is the sheer hard work involved in clearing these before a single picture is hung. The Glue Factory in Glasgow, the new venue for the Glasgow School of Arts MFA show (along with the more fragrant CCA) is a prime example.

The Glue Factory is in the Spiers Locks area of north Glasgow. In the same industrial estate, large buildings hold technical, office and practice space for Scottish Opera and the National Theatre of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama is redeveloping another set of sheds for their new state-of-the-art dance facility.

The Glue Factory was less salubrious when we visited two weeks ago. Downstairs, it looked like what it was: an abandoned factory. Dust gathered on the bare brick walls, windowless coldrooms were dark with mould, huge boilers lay silent and the floor was a mess of debris and dirt.

Upstairs, conditions were better: the walls were painted white, the floor was clear and it resembled a gallery. What attracted the staff of the Master of Fine Art course (MFA) at the GSA was its sheer size and mixture of atmospheres: the rough-and-ready ground floor, the loft-like space of the upper floors. It will be the home to the MFA show for at least two years, after 10 years of being staged at the Tramway, and all 25 young artists completing the course will show work there from June 11.

The eyes of curators, gallery owners, collectors and journalists will be on them. Not only is the course, established in 1988, lauded in itself, it has a habit of producing award-winning artists: Richard Wright of Glasgow, this year’s Turner Prize winner, is a graduate, as were Douglas Gordon, Louise Hopkins and Simon Starling. The Glue Factory could be the start of some very special careers.

One of the graduates this year is Ellie Harrison. Much of her work entails appearing in the media – primarily newspapers – although she is also into arranging parties.

One of her ideas, a syndicate of artists who will collaborate to try to win various National Lottery draws, has already received media coverage, not only because it seems a good way for artists, in these hard-pressed times, to get money, but also because she has organised the whole plan, enlisting the help of 40 artists across the UK and figured out the best way of maximising their chances.

Looking around the Glue Factory, hints of other work are already in place. Tom Harrup has left orders on a sign that his patch of mouldy, depressing brick wall is to be left as is and not repainted.

Deniz Uster is doing something with potatoes in a dark room which is being filled with soil and compost. The use of the brickwork, and some of the exposed beams, is also a deliberate, silent nod to another vast industrial space: the Arsenale in Venice, a venerable shipbuilding dock which is now the centre for the art and architectural Biennales.

John Calcutt, the director of the course, is excited by the new space. He thinks it will teach the students, as well as showcasing their work. He says: “I think the Glue Factory offers something in relation to their future professional practice, particularly in the challenges that the space offers.

“We want to produce students who are capable of being individual, independent artists. There’s been a history of finding spaces to work in in contemporary art, certainly in Glasgow where there hasn’t been much of a commercial gallery sector.

“So, practically, what they are learning will be very important. It’s a very raw space. And where Tramway was one big space, this is four.”

Graham Ramsay, artist and lecturer on the course, adds: “It is obvious what it is: it’s an early 20th-century industrial facility. But it offers a lot of flexibility. It offers very contrasting conditions. Downstairs is very rough, upstairs is light and cleaner. Because of its flexibility, there have been no problems adjusting to it. And there’s plenty of space: 20,000 sq ft of it.”

By the time you read this, of course, the Glue Factory’s interior will have changed almost beyond recognition. And the MFA itself has changed in recent years. Students used to be judged as “pass” or “fail”, albeit with merits and distinctions. Now, to fit in with the higher education standards of the University of Glasgow, the first year leads to postgraduate certificates and a postgraduate diploma, followed by the full MFA in the second year.

Each stage of this has a credit rating, which technically means students could transfer to other institutes of higher learning in Europe, although 99% of them do not.

Also, as the postgraduate population grows at the GSA, the more room for shared courses there are. So there is the chance to meet students from different courses in the shared ones such as core research skills, as well as on elective courses taken from different degrees. Calcutt says: “It has become standard now that the student experience is far more fluid than perhaps it used to be.”

Ramsay adds: “We are still committed to the process of developing the artists’ practice. That is an organic process, and we try to allow as much freedom as possible.

“ This year has been an incredibly hard working year. What is really important to the culture of the course is how the internal dynamic of the year works. What they have learned from each other is amazing. You want to leave the course with genuine friends, and I think that is what has happened here.”

More meaningful change is also built into the course. In two years, the change in the students’ lives and work can be dramatic. An interim show, recently staged by the course’s first year, can be very different from the final one. “Sometimes there are radical changes, and that is often the reason why people come here, to have the space to do that,” Ramsay says.

“You might come here with a particular thing in mind, or have a problem that you want to work on, and sometimes the course is for clarifying and developing those issues.”

As we leave the Glue Factory, I ask a question which makes both teachers slightly uncomfortable: Which of these artists is really going to make it commercially?

Calcutt says: “I can only say for myself. It is very hard to say. To predict commercial success is very hard: will a curator pick you up? There’s absolutely no way of predicting that.”

Ramsay adds: “The fact is that most artists have to have some other form of income. The art is not their entire livelihood. And the idea of some kind of instant commercial success: well, in this day and age – it is quite an old-fashioned one now.”

Fast becoming a tradition on the Glasgow art calendar, the MFA auction is organised each year by final year Masters students to raise funds for their degree show catalogue and touring exhibition.

This year’s auction promises to be a great success, featuring work by prominent artists such as Jim Lambie, Ross Sinclair, Graham Fagen, Joanne Tatham & Tom O’Sullivan, David Sherry, Claire Barclay, Martin Boyce, Victoria Morton and Kate Davis, as well as current students and recent graduates of the MFA programme.

Jenny Hogarth (MFA graduate 2009) will present her collaborative work Players made with Kim Coleman at the Frieze art fair 2009. Based upon a projection of stage-managed and live events filmed at the fair, transforming the exposition into a mise-en-scene featuring unwitting visitors, gallerists and fair workers.

As the entire fair becomes subject to and of the work, Players effectively changes the experience of viewing from spectacle to participatory event. Players is located next to A14, opposite Hix Oyster Bar and Restaurant.

Kaifeng Chun wins Singapore Art Prize

ONE corner of the Singapore Art Museum has been transformed into an office.

A desk and chair are placed in the middle of the space. A laptop computer lies open on the table. Files are neatly arranged on shelves and a paper tray sits on top of a cupboard.

Everything seems to be in order. It looks like the office of a very neat worker. But as your eyes glide over the mainly grey and white furniture lit by the harsh fluorescent lights, little things look slightly out of place. A grey knife juts out of a penholder, hinting at violence. A tiny flag lies in the waste paper basket. Could it be a symbol of surrender?

This installation, hinting at the regimented office life, yesterday bagged the richest art award in town: the Singapore Art Exhibition prize, which comes with a $50,000 grant.

Relative newcomer Chun Kaifeng, 26, beat 28 other artists with his installation, He's Satisfied From Monday To Friday And On Sunday He Loves To Cry.

Chun, who is studying for his master's in fine art at The Glasgow School of Art on a National Arts Council (NAC) overseas bursary, told The Straits Times in a phone interview from Glasgow: 'My work always draws from my experiences of living in Singapore. The room is a reflection of life in Singapore, which is very controlled. There is a sense of stillness, of waiting.' (The Straits Times 7th October 2009)

Silver Smoke of Dreams {in the Footsteps of The English Opium-Eater}

With this walk artist and Pataphysical Cartographer Jim Colquhoun will attempt to forge a ‘Northwest Passage’ through the city in the footsteps of the English Opium-Eater – Thomas De Quincey – sometime resident of Edinburgh and lifelong slave to the dreaded Blackdrop. In so doing we will recreate De Quincey’s drug-fuelled perambulations by other means – these will include Rhabdomancy (the ancient art of divination by way of a wand), certain exercises in Magickal Invocation, the reading aloud of forbidden texts, intense listening and the forming of a Circle of Power at a place of Occult Significance – all in the service of inducing altered states of consciousness with which to lift the Scales of Habit from our eyes and, in consequence, to view the city (and ourselves) in a New and Wondrous Light!

Participants may gather outside The Mitre on High St at Midday precisely on 22nd August…

GANGHUT are an artistic collective consisting of twelve artists including current MFA students Amy Marletta and Sarah Forrest. They are renowned for their camaraderie and for their impressive building projects that transform spaces. As part of their exhibition of all-new work for DCA, 'Hands Across the Fire' features a central stage designed in collaboration with Edinburgh's Draw Architects, and artworks from each of the GANGHUT members. The exhibition will also feature signature Watch-towers within and outwith the gallery, a GANGHUT portfolio of prints, and a series of special events and impromptu happenings.

Three MFA students - Shelly Nadashi, Nicolas Party and Kate V Robertson - have started a new collaborative group called 'The Cause of Inflation Damage Limitation Orchestra'.
They are going to Frankfurt to perform their daring debut, “The Complete History of World Terrorism as We Know it Today + A Solution”.
This performance will take place in the Plateaux festival on the 30.4.09 and 1.5.09 after a three week residency period.
