FLOCK GLASGOW-TLV - A RESPONSE
MFA TEL AVIV
FLOCK
The Glasgow MFA programme took part in a joint exhibition with the Bezalel MFA programme in Tel Aviv. Entitled Flock, the exhibition was conceived and organised by students from the two schools. Among its principle aims was to find and investigate commonalities between the participating artists and to consider the variety of work being produced internationally by students undertaking their Masters’ studies.
Five students from GSA travelled with the artworks to help with the installation of the exhibition, which consisted of work in various mediums; time based photography and film, drawing, painting and sculptural work. With over fifty students represented, the curatorial ambition was strictly limited. Formal decisions of display were at the forefront, and care was taken not to use or apply themes with the installation or between artworks. Works between artists of the respective institutions were deliberately inter-dispersed. To think about the exhibition in terms of success or failure was not regarded as essential. The exhibition was a framework around which to begin a process of dialogue. To conclude, Flock set out a blue-print for further projects and to formulate questions for further exchanges; what should be the framework for exchange? What is to be achieved and how can we evaluate the success or quantify the idea of a successful exchange?

Flock is an exhibition of work by 50 students from the MFA programmes at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem and Glasgow School of Art. The exhibition developed out of a collaboration between the two schools and the groups of students at each of them, and has been made possible by the exchange students traveling between the two cities.
Students from Glasgow have sent works on paper and video to Tel Aviv, whereas students from Bezalel have been open to present works of their choosing. This concept will be reversed later in the year, when the show travels to Glasgow.
Works in the exhibition are presented under no specific theme, but simply reflect a selection of works coming out of each of the schools, and through being presented together ask us to consider the mix of work being produced internationally by students undertaking their Masters’ studies. Students in the exhibition are originating from Israel and Scotland, but also Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Norway, Russia, Singapore and the United States.
