An exhibition of new work by Laurence Figgis, Brin Frost and current MFA student Zoe Williams. The artists have in-common an interest in the creation of internalised worlds, drawing on aspects of the surreal, the uncanny, the precious and the abject, and mobilising a diverse range of mediums to explore these themes including ornamental sculpture, collage and film. The objects and two-dimensional works on show in this exhibition appear on first glance to be drawn from a rich concoction of soap-opera, luxury commodity and primal myth. However on closer inspection, these isolated signifiers, divorced from their original context, often reveal darker, more disturbing undertones.

In discussion with the Glasgow journals, CCA has invited UK and international publishers to join us in exploring the issues and enthusiasms current within art writing and publishing, providing a context in which to view similar activity in Glasgow. Exhibitors will include Bookworks (London), Casco (Utrecht), Motto Distribution (Berlin), Torpedo (Oslo), Pist Protta (Copenhagen), Transmission (Glasgow), Abake (London/France), Automatic Books (Italy), Mousse (Italy), Mono Paper (London), VERSUCH (London), Ditto Press (London) and Eastside Projects (Birmingham).

Organised by our new MFA lecturer Sarah Tripp in collaboration with Jamie Kenyon.

Martin Boyce wins Turner Prize

TURNER PRIZE 2011

The Turner Prize exhibition is now open at BALTIC, and features two MFA graduates, Karla Black and Martin Boyce. In 2007 the Prize was staged at Tate Liverpool as a curtain-raiser to Liverpool being European Capital of Culture in 2008. Following its success there, it has been decided that the Prize will be presented at Tate Britain and at a gallery outside London in alternate years. The first non-Tate venue outside the capital will be BALTIC in Gateshead.

Each year the Prize is judged by an independent jury. Chaired by Penelope Curtis, Director Tate Britain, the jury for The Turner Prize 2011 comprises: Katrina Brown, Director, The Common Guild, Glasgow; Vasif Kortun, Platform Garanti, Istanbul; Nadia Schneider, Freelance Curator; and Godfrey Worsdale, Director, BALTIC. The four shortlisted artists will be announced in May 2011.

The Turner Prize is awarded each year to a British artist under the age of fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding. The Prize fund of £40,000 is divided between the shortlisted artists with £25,000 going to the winner and £5,000 to each of the other three artists. Previous winners include Tomma Abts, Gilbert & George, Douglas Gordon, Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Steve McQueen, Gillian Wearing, Rachel Whiteread and Richard Wright.

Transmission Gallery presents an exhibition drawing together new work by nine Glasgow-based artists. Non-thematic in its intentions, the exhibition spans a wide range of media and approaches.

Sarah Forrest - exhibition

Glasgow Sculpture Studios would like to invite you to join us for the preview of P is for Protagonist the solo exhibition of newly commissioned work by Sarah Forrest, The Gordon Foundation MFA Graduate Fellow 2010-11.

For P is for Protagonist, Forrest draws upon certain sensibilities found within gothic literature, paying particular attention to what is not seen. Forrest places her protagonists at the edge of visibility, presenting them in the text as a subject who comes in and out of focus or as a spectral presence within the video work.

The work presents two concurrent narratives that unfold and overlap, putting into play as they do so, her ongoing exploration of the interrelationships between maker, work and viewer.

Forrest will also launch her first publication alongside this exhibition on Saturday 10 December 2011 at GSS. The publication is designed in collaboration with Glasgow-based graphic designer, Zeynep Arman.

Born in Dundee UK 1981, Forrest received her MFA at The Glasgow School of Art in 2010. Recent exhibitions include DAYSTransmission Gallery Glasgow, The Spectator Intermedia Gallery, Centre for Contemporary Arts Glasgow,Hands Across the Fire(GANGHUT) DCA Dundee, L.P.
